Although this practice area sounds a bit dry and boring, a robust policy and procedures framework is critical to every organisation, not least from a risk management perspective. An up-to-date, plain-English framework is an effective antidote to a host of potential staff problems, and a very good defence against legal challenges. If you don’t have such a framework in place, as well as a system for keeping it current, you’re sailing pretty close to the wind. HR compliance can be a bit of a minefield—and is the source of many urban myths—but it’s hugely important to get right. I have designed, written and/or reviewed policies and procedures frameworks for a number of organisations, including designing the correct linkages between policies and procedures and employment agreements.
